Basement Hideout

Over the last 50 years there has been millions of musicians creating millions of albums many of which never actually made it out to the masses. Often times the few copies that did get released end up in the basement of local thrift and record stores never to be heard again. In some cases that's a good thing but, whoever made that music did so because they wanted to share it with people. I want to give some of those artists a second chance. I hope you will enjoy what I post on this blog for what it is.

The Yellow Rolls-Royce

Being that I am a fan of Riz Ortolani I had to pick this one up when I saw it at Goodwill. Not by any means my favorite of his OST's but it does have the rather popular tune "Forget Domani." The quality isn't super however (especially the last track)its worth a listen.

Apparently there was a Japanese re-issue on cd which it looks as though you can pick up for between 30-and 40 bucks.

It is a 1964 movie telling three seperate love stories that are all tied together by a single yellow rolls-royce.

You can get a description of the movie here.

SPACE!!!

Ok so nothing special...today.

I just have a call to arms for all of you budding hip hop producers who might happen across my blog. I love Galt MacDermot and he has been sampled to infinity and back by some top dog hip hop producers. I think this song could have been used in a million different ways and probably a lot better. The song is called "Space" and good ol Busta Rhymes used it in "Woo Hah!" but, doesn't hurt to try and make something cooler right (sorry B)? Take this and do with it what you will. Even if you don't want to make something out of it...give it a listen. Great tune!

Funkin Funky!

Quazar- (self titled)

Today's goods are product of a request from a friend. He asked for some 70's funk. I picked this up near the end of college thinking it would be a good party record. It got a little love but not nearly as much as it deserves.

I don't know much about Quazar and honestly I don't think there is much to say other then that it kicks major funkin ass. I have read that it was a side project of Glenn Goins (singer and guitarist in Parliment Funkadelic) and Jerome Brailey. There was a 7" release of "Funk 'n' Roll" but, as for other albums I haven't been able to find any.

I'm not really a huge P-Funk connoisseur so if you are reading this and I have it all wrong please feel free to leave a comment and clear things up. I have a lot of records that could go up on here so if you want to hear something specific to a style, let me know and I will see what I can muster up. Funk you, I'm outta here!

Sweet Lou

Lou Donaldson- Sweet Lou (Out of Print Blue Note)

This is one of my favorite Lou Donaldson records and I'm happy to share it here so that you can enjoy some awesome 70's blue note Jazz. There is a ton of info about Sweet Pappa Lou out on the net if you want to do further research. I just thought I would put this one up because I was jammin out this morning. You can't get this album on CD so you would have to go to your local used record store to find it. Some of the songs are available on various compilations that have since been put together. Enjoy!

What do you say to a naked lady?

Hmm...rape song anyone?
So wow where to start on this...when your listening through soundtracks for 4-5 hours at a record store you start to hear a lot of the same. This OST is filled with a lot of swingin upbeat tunes you'd expect from soundtracks in this era so as I started listening to it I wasn't expecting anything special.
My buddy was sitting on a couch behind me and suggested that I put on track 4 on side 1. I didn't notice when I put the record on the platter that there was a song titled "Rape is not as easy as it looks." Very apprehensive yet extremely interested I skipped forward. Since we were listening to this on speakers at our local record dungeon instead of headphones we managed to get an awkward look or two.
I don't think that I have ever laughed with rape as the subject matter but this one got me. A very tongue in cheek vaudeville song is what awaits you. If you have a good sense of humor this one will probably have the same effect on you at first listen. We decided to do more research before I posted about this OST (as usual).
It's not as unheard of as I had figured but still hard to find on vinyl. The soundtrack is from a 1969-70 film by Allen Funt (one of the producers behind candid camera) showing men's candid reactions to women appearing naked in everyday social situations. All of the songs actually make sense when you see them in the video. All except for the "Rape" track, that one is still a little bit ambiguous and it seemed it was kinda tossed into the film. If you watch the movie and have an analysis as to what its purpose was, let me know. I managed to find a full version of the movie for your streaming pleasure here.

Danny Holien Who?

Gooooo Goodwill!
So no...I don't have the full LP (as the picture suggests)but, I managed to find a 45 single at Goodwill for $0.69 that has the tracks "Colorado" and "Red Wing." I'm not gonna lie I kinda like both tunes. Both of the tracks have a folk/rock vibe that spured some head bobbing while recording them. Danny's voice totally reminded me of one of my personal fav's from the same genre, Mr. Terry Reid.

The full self titled album and the 45 single were both released on the short lived Colorado label, Tubmleweed Records Inc, which has some very interesting history. I managed to dig up a site where someone went through the trouble of documenting it all. If you feel like reading about it you can click here. According to the site Holien moved on to start a band called Midwest. I lost interest searching for info about them but, if you really dig his style then that should be the next step in your search. Enjoy!

Female Animal...I like!

Wow...
This OST is awesome. After snaggin they vinyl version for a pretty pennyI found out you can get it for about $2o dollars on CD here. As for the original vinyl release on Canyon Records, well, I'm not even sure there ever was an official release so if you have more info please share!
I will say this album is going to be better appreciated by the seasoned OST junkie. It has the standard bossa/lounge jazz vibe which was characterisitc to the majority of these types of films however this particular soundtrack seems to flow a bit better. There is definetly some groovy surprises along the way. I got sucked into it pretty easily while transfering it to my computer and have bee listening to it while surfin the web. Great background music. Anyway...enjoy!

The Cross and the Switchblade

FUNKY PROPAGANDA
I got this for free yesterday when I bought a rare sexpolitation soundtrack (which I'll post later). I have to be honest it's starting to grow on me.
This is the soundtrack to a film based on a true story that I probably will never watch about a minister that helps a little gang banger change his ways. Collectors of secular film and music and probably Moltar (since this movie stars Eric Estrada) may want to watch the film but, I'm good with just enjoying the music.
To sum up the album...a lot of preachy, christian, follow god to get me out the ghetto nonsense. If you can get past the lyrics there is a lot of like able 70's flair and a few golden breaks that make listening to this record worth it. I'll point out...track 2 on the first side "Switchblade Theme"... can we say some wicked ass "Enter the Dragon" Lalo Schifrin style break action! Oh yeah!
This album was released on Light Records, apparently a christian label (go figure). If you wanna find out more about the label you can click here.
